Volunteer
Get paid in tail wags!
Volunteers are the backbone of the Pembina Valley Humane Society. We’re grateful for the compassionate care, dependability, and skills that our volunteers bring to the benefit of the animals in our care!
Our various volunteer positions provide the opportunity to contribute to the care of animals in need, support our mission, and give back to the community. We have a strong and dedicated volunteer team, but we always have room for one more.
Ready to join the team? Here’s how!
It’s easy! Complete a Volunteer Application Form, either online or get a paper copy from the shelter (paper forms can be dropped off in person, or scanned and emailed to jennifer@pvhsociety.ca).
Once we’ve got your application, we’ll schedule a time for you to come in and we can chat about your interests and skills, training, and scheduling. After you’re brought onboard, you’ll get theoretical and hands-on training to ensure you’re providing the best possible care to our cats and dogs!
Feed your soul with snuggles!
We are currently recruiting volunteers in all areas. See below for details.
Cat Care
Join our Cat Care team, where we get down and dirty (in a good way) to make sure our feline friends feel like royalty. Here’s the “scoop” on what we do (haha scoop? Get it?):
- change their bedding to ensure they’re lounging in comfort
- keep litter clean and fresh
- provide them fresh food and water…bon appetit!
Basically, you’re entrusted with their health, safety, and comfort! You’ll be working closely with our kitties, making sure they feel the love.
Volunteers suited for this position are those who demonstrate efficiency and responsibility, capable of working both independently and with a partner.
This role requires a commitment of a minimum of one weekly shift, either 9am to 11am or 4pm to 6pm, Monday through Sunday (time frames can be flexible).
Cat Enrichment
Our Cat Enrichment volunteers come to the shelter to socialize with the cats! Some kitties like the gentle pats, while others might like a nice warm lap to snuggle on or a good play session. Volunteers provide the cats in our care companionship, affection, and comfort during their stay with us.
Volunteers best suited for this position will have experience with cats and have an understanding of basic kitty body language…and not mind the “love sprinkles” (read: fur) that will be left on them when they leave!
This role doesn’t have a set schedule, but a commitment of at least once a week would be beneficial to the cats. Available times are generally from 12p to 4pm, but can be negotiable.
Dog Care
Our Dog Care crew rolls up their sleeves and makes tails wag with their top-notch cleaning skills. Let’s spill the tea on this role:
- keep the kennels squeaky clean (did someone say SQUEAKY??)
- make sure the floors are spotless enough to eat kibble off of
This is truly a role for those who love dogs, and are comfortable with the tiny terriers all the way to the gentle giants! It may get a bit rowdy back in the kennels, but we’ve got you covered with hearing protection.
This role requires a commitment of a minimum of one weekly shift, either 9am to 11am or 4pm to 6pm, Monday through Sunday (time frames can be flexible).

Dog Enrichment
In this role, volunteers come to play with our dogs! They can be taken out to the backyard for a good play session or relax to enjoy being outside, or they can be taken on walks around the neighborhood. Volunteers play an integral part in helping them destress from the shelter environment and get them out to stretch their legs!
The ideal person for this role is one who has experience with dogs, their body language, and how they play. They should have the ability to redirect and maneuver large dogs.
This role doesn’t have a set schedule, but a commitment of at least once a week would be beneficial to the dogs. Available times are generally from 12p to 4p, but can be negotiable.
Goodnights
This position is all about making sure our animals get tucked in all comfy cozy at night, because every dog deserves a peaceful night’s sleep! Here’s what you’ll do:
- let our doggos out of their kennels for their final pee break of the night, and make sure any accidents are cleaned up
- make sure all dog and cat water bowls are full (because we all need that emergency glass of water next to the bed)
- ensure the boogeyman can’t get in…securely latch and fasten all kennel and cat room doors
Help our cat and dogs’ dreams come true by stepping into the Goodnight Shift, and apply to be a “Tuck-In Technician”!
The ideal person for this role is someone who can work independently during late-night hours, and can handle various weather conditions. This would be a great opportunity for friends or couples to team up to send our animals off to dreamland!
This role requires a commitment of one weekly shift, generally 9pm to 10:30pm, Monday through Sunday (time frames can be flexible).

Volunteer FAQs
Volunteers must be a minimum of 14 years old (minimum 16 years old for dog-related roles). Families are welcome to volunteer together if children are under the age of 14.
We have an open application period, meaning you can apply to volunteer at any time! If we don’t have any available volunteer shifts for the area you are interested in, you will be trained to be able to cover any absences until a weekly shift is available.
The PVHS relies heavily on our volunteers to help care for the animals. Some roles such as cat and dog care and the Goodnight shift require volunteers to commit to a minimum of one weekly two hour shift for a minimum of six months. For other roles, volunteers are asked to commit to six consecutive months but are on an as-needed basis.
If you are scheduled for a shift, but you are unable to make it that day, we ask that you inform the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible so we can find appropriate coverage. If a volunteer misses three consecutive shifts, or six shifts overall are missed within the first six months, you will be asked to come for an in-person meeting to understand the absences.
For certain roles, we may require volunteers over the age of 18 to submit a Criminal Record Check as part of the application process. Criminal Record Checks completed within the last 12 months are acceptable. We will let you know if your assigned role requires a Criminal Record Check. This fee is covered by the PVHS.
Yes! The Pembina Valley Humane Society participates in the school credit program. Our Volunteer Coordinator is also willing to write letters of recommendation for volunteers that exemplify a positive attitude and show themselves to be reliable, hardworking, and dedicated to their volunteer efforts.
