Adoption FAQs

What does it cost to adopt an animal?  Can you call me when a specific animal comes in?  Answers to these and more questions about adopting from the Pembina Valley Humane Society are all right here!

Our Adoption Centre is located at 462 Jefferson Street in Morden. Appointments are appreciated, to ensure that we can take the time needed to help you find the right pet for your family.  To make an appointment to meet or adopt an animal, call 204-822-9413.

It’s easy!  When you’ve fallen in love with a cat or dog you saw on our social media pages or our website, simply fill in an application!  You can do so online, or get a paper copy from the shelter.  Our staff will do all of our initial checks, and then invite you and your family (dogs included) to meet the animal you’re interested in adopting.  You’ll get to spend some time with the animal in a safe and controlled environment…if you can’t live without the animal, and we feel it’s the right fit for everyone, we’ll move forward with finalizing the adoption!  If you meet the animal and it’s not quite right, you’re under no obligation to adopt, and we’ll work with you to find the perfect pet for your family.

We avoid listing specific breeds on our website to make sure potential adopters make decisions based on the individual dog’s characteristics and needs, rather than preconceived notions about certain breeds.

Kittens and cats under one year – $150 (two kittens or cats under one year – $200)
Adult cats one year and older – $100 (two adult cats one year and older – $150)

Of course! Our team will bring the animal into a room or yard where you can get to know them.

The idea that there are “time limits” on an animal in adoption is a common misconception.  There are no time limits on animals in adoption. They will remain available for adoption until they find a home barring a serious medical or behavioural issue arising.  While we hope to find animals home quickly, sometimes they take a little longer waiting for the right person to come along.  We will promote them during this time to encourage people to consider taking them home. No animal is euthanized for space, or because they have been here too long.

The Pembina Valley Humane Society is dedicated to ending pet overpopulation. All dogs and cats adopted from the Humane Society are spayed or neutered. While veterinarians used to believe that spay or neuter couldn’t be performed safely on young animals, it is now widely agreed that early spay and neuter is safe and often reduces recovery times.

The Humane Society discourages people from adopting pets as gifts for other adults. A pet is a long term commitment, and the pet you choose for someone may not be the pet they would choose for themselves. Parents are permitted to adopt a pet as a gift for children, although we still suggest that the pet meet the whole family as the best choice. If you are adopting a dog and your children don’t meet the dog first, we may have you sign a waiver before taking the dog home which promises to ensure that everyone is introduced carefully.

Sometimes we know that a dog or cat has lived with other animals and our team also tests them to see if they appear to do well with other animals. If you have a dog, we encourage you to bring him in to meet your potential new dog as the meeting often goes more smoothly in a controlled, neutral environment rather than in your living room. Of course, it is always important to monitor interactions carefully when you first bring your pet home.

A dog can come into our care in a variety of ways. Depending on how the dog came to us we are sometimes able to obtain a full history of a dog’s life prior to arriving, but other times their history is unknown. For every dog that comes into our care, we have a very comprehensive assessment process to determine what type of home would be the best fit for each animal. Our age limits are in place for the benefit of your family and to ensure that the dog will be comfortable in its new home. Age limits can be placed for a variety of reasons:

  • A known history that the dog is not comfortable with children
  • The dog has displayed behaviours that would not be safe around children
  • The dog has a boisterous personality and may be able to injure a small child

Even if your child has experience with dogs, not every child that will enter your home does and it is not fair for your family or the dog to be in a situation where it will be uncomfortable or feel unsafe.  Please know that when making a decision for any requirements for a dog we take its history, assessment results, and any behaviour demonstrated at the shelter into consideration.

Things to Know Before You Adopt

Before you make the decision to adopt, there are some important things to consider!  This guide will help you prepare for your new family member’s needs, ensuring a happy and comfortable homecoming!

Pets, especially cats and dogs, thrive on routine. When bringing a new animal into your home, provide them with a quiet space initially, allowing them time to acclimate. A corner with a bed and toy can help them observe and adjust to your schedule.

Consider the lifespan of your chosen pet – dogs can live 8-15 years, and cats even longer. This commitment requires careful thought, as they become part of your family for an extended period.

Investing in high-quality pet food may seem pricey at first, but it can ultimately save on vet bills associated with poor diets. A well-balanced diet can benefit your pet’s health and even decrease the frequency of litter box usage.

It’s important to be financially prepared for veterinary expenses. Whether it’s a routine check-up or an emergency, these costs can add up quickly. One way to reduce the financial burden is to consider getting pet insurance. By planning ahead, you can avoid any unexpected strain on your finances.

All pets, whether they’re young or old, usually need some training. This means teaching them how to behave and do things correctly. You can learn from experts or trainers about the best ways to train your pet. Training helps your pet listen to you and follow your instructions, and it’s also a fun way for you both to spend time together and become close buddies.

Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise to avoid problems with their behavior. Just like people need to move and play to stay healthy and happy, dogs and cats do too.

Taking your dog for walks or letting them play in dog parks is really important. It helps keep their body fit and their mind active. For example, if you take your dog for a walk every day, they’ll be less likely to bark a lot or chew on things they’re not supposed to. They’ll feel more relaxed and content because they’re getting the exercise they need.

It’s important to pick a pet that fits well with your life. Think about your daily routine and what’s happening in your family. For instance, if you’re away from home for a long time because of work, you might want to choose a pet that doesn’t need constant attention. On the other hand, if you’re expecting a baby, you should get a pet that is comfortable and friendly around infants. This way, both your pet and your family can get along well and be happy together.

The Real Cost of Pet Ownership

To help give you an idea, the average annual cost of owning a dog in Canada is $2,500, where cats range from $600 to $1,800. This does not include any unexpected veterinary care—we can talk with you about the costs and benefits of pet insurance. It’s also important to remember the cost of your time needed for walking, playing, and caring for your animal.
