The Pet Safe Program in partnership with Genesis House began in 2021 to fill a need in Southern Manitoba. Pet Safe provides short-term housing at no charge for animals belonging to individuals in crisis due to family violence or abuse.
Statistics show that 22-65% of women in an abusive relationship delay leaving their home due to concern for pets. Abusers may use control tactics to threaten their pets or deliberately harm them. Prior to the Pet Safe Program many women may not have sought refuge at Genesis House due to fear of leaving a pet behind.
Animals in the Pet Safe program will be placed in foster care with approved foster homes for up to a maximum of 4 weeks. Pets will be provided with basic veterinary care such as vaccinations and spay/neuter. PVHS will provide supplies such as food or cat litter if the owner is unable to do so.
Women wishing to access this program must be referred by Genesis House. Pets must be in stable health. The PVHS will not take in pets that have been deemed dangerous. Access to the program is subject to availability and funds. If the PVHS is unable to accommodate you may be referred to the Winnipeg Humane Society Safe Pet Program.
